UNDERWATER INSPECTION

Underwater examinations are an essential inspection method for structures adjacent to or over a watercourse. Given the increased environmental risks we are faced with such as higher risks of flooding, it is essential to understand the condition both below and around the waterline. Over the years, structures have been identified which have failed due to scour. This could be considered one of the highest risks for structures over watercourse.

Empirical ensure accurate data is captured below and above the waterline by use of various techniques such as underwater cameras, probing and hands on tactile examinations of elements within water.

In addition, Empirical have a close working relationship with specialist dive teams to ensure that accurate data is captured by the safest and most appropriate method. The main purposes of underwater examinations are to enable assessment on the risk of scour damage or to identify any defects hidden beneath the water line. This includes the undertaking of riverbed profile and radial measurements around the structures as per the methodology detailed within Network Rail Standards for underwater examinations.
