SPECIAL INSPECTION

A special inspection provides detailed information on a particular element, area or defect that is causing concern, or inspection of which is beyond the requirements of the general and principal inspection regime as described in DMRB CS 450.

Special inspections can be used to ascertain the extent of visible or hidden defects, and the potential cause of these. Alternatively, they may require as built arrangements to be confirmed. The methods required such as the testing and sampling regime will be specific to the structure, structural form and defect. An example of a special inspection for a reinforced concrete bridge would be the undertaking of concrete condition testing.  Using a combination of non-destructive testing, localised investigative techniques, and sampling of materials to ascertain the condition and cause of any deterioration. This could include half-cell potential mapping, depth of chloride, depth of concrete cover to reinforcement and depth of carbonation.
